Weekly Parent Letter - 7/29/22

July 29, 2022
By Bill Sharp

Dear Parents and Families of RCS,

As August looms around the corner, I would like to give you a quick update on the past couple of weeks and look forward to what is coming in the days ahead.

We were incredibly blessed to spend the week hosting a mission team from Quakertown, PA. They came to RCS and spent five days cleaning, painting, repairing, digging, and even some demolition work to help get the school ready for the 2022-23 school year.  The team of 22 adults and teens stayed on campus and worked incredibly hard (even in the awful heat) to get buildings painted, windows repaired, showers divided in the boy’s locker room, lights upgraded to LED, electrical work, and other outdoor projects that were on our “summer list.”  We are SUPER grateful for this team and their hard work, and we are excited that they are considering coming again next summer!  Also, we once again have the privilege to partner with a team from Village Church who will be on campus tomorrow (30 July) to paint a couple of classrooms.  Please be in prayer for their safety and energy as they come to minister to Warrior Nation.

Here are some upcoming events to note:

  • Orientations
    • Kindergarten – Friday, 19 August at 4:00 p.m. in the library
    • New Secondary (6-12) Students – Friday, 19 August, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the cafeteria
  • Warrior Welcome (K-12) – Friday, 19 August, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the back of the school.  Food, fun, and fellowship with be on the menu.  More details to follow.  NOTE:  This will be an outdoor event.
  • Meet and Greet Day – Monday, 22 August.  A chance to come by during your designated time slot to meet teachers, drop off supplies, get locker assignments (7-12), and other information (like schedules, parking passes, etc.). Please attend during the times below (it’s not necessary to stay for the entire time):
    • 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. – Last names A – I
    • 10:30 – 12:00 – Last names J – R
    • 1:30 – 3:00 – Last names S – Z

As we make final plans in preparation for a new school year, remember the words of the prophet Isaiah: “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.”  Is. 40:31. Be renewed in the Lord as we anticipate the great things God will do this coming year!!

Blessings,

Weekly Parent Letter - 7/15/22

Dear Parents and Families of RCS,

We are officially into the second half of summer, where some will cheer (parents), and some will boo (students).  We continue to see God providing for RCS in unexpected ways.  We should not be surprised when we see God come through.  In 71 years, He has never let RCS down, but sometimes I still catch myself thinking, “Whoa, how did he do that?”

Again this week, as some of the leadership team was engrossed in the FACTS conference, God came through and provided the final piece of the 2022-23 faculty – a teacher for Middle School English!!  We want to welcome Mrs. Selah Williamson to the RCS family, where she will teach 7th, 8th, and 9th grade English.  A graduate of Mississippi State University, Mrs. Williamson has a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in English and a master’s degree in English Education.  She has taught English at several colleges and schools, including the University of West Alabama and Lighthouse Baptist Academy.  Most recently, Mrs. Williamson and her husband lived in Greenville, SC, where he attended Bible college.  At the same time, she taught in both Tabernacle Christian School and College.  With a nearly 3-year-old and twin 1-year-olds in tow, they decided to move closer to family this summer in Amelia Courthouse.  Mrs. Williamson is thrilled to join Warrior Nation and looking forward to the coming year.  Welcome, Mrs. Williamson!

Please continue to be in prayer for the two mission teams coming to serve RCS this summer.  They will be working on various maintenance, painting, and cleanup projects.

For you planners, we are scheduling a Campus Cleanup Day on Saturday, 6 August.  As we get closer to the date, we will have more details regarding times and projects, so stay tuned.  Remember, if you seek God for an answer, direction, or provision, Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus.” So keep seeking and trusting, and he will not let you down!

I hope to see many of you on campus on 6 August to join in and help with tasks that should be done for the coming school year.  Have a great weekend!

Blessings,

Parent Letter - 7/8/22

Dear Parents and Families of RCS,

One of my favorite Old Testament stories of teamwork and God’s provision comes from the book of Nehemiah.  As the personal cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia, Nehemiah served the king faithfully while in exile from his homeland.  Upon hearing of the broken condition of Jerusalem, Nehemiah was heartbroken.  Try as he might, he could not keep his grief hidden from the king.  When the king saw the brokenness on Nehemiah’s face, Nehemiah prayed and boldly told the king why he was downcast.  Then, in a surprising turn of events, King Artaxerxes made provision for the return of Nehemiah to Jerusalem as well as providing money and resources to rebuild the city wall and refortify his homeland.

When we are faithful to God, he will open doors of opportunity for his people and their ministry to accomplish the tasks necessary to thrive in their ministry.  RCS is no different, and God has provided.  Through your prayers and partnership, laborers will be here on campus.  On 17 July, a team of approximately 20 people will arrive on campus from Calvary Chapel in Quakertown, PA, to assist in a number of painting, electrical, and general maintenance tasks that need to be completed on campus.  They will be on campus for a week, and we are already blessed by the number of families who have stepped forward to help provide meals for the team.

Then, on Saturday, 30 July, Village Church returns again this summer with another amazing team of folks to assist with painting, plumbing, and flooring projects.  Please be in prayer for these teams for safety and strength to accomplish all that needs to be done.

For you medium to long-range planners, we are scheduling a Campus Cleanup Day on Saturday, 6 August.  We will have more details regarding times and projects as we get closer to the date, so stay tuned.  As we see in 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 – “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.  For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, and all were made to drink of one Spirit.”

I hope to see many of you on campus that day to join in and help with tasks that need to be done for the coming school year.  Have a great weekend!

Blessings,

Parent Letter - 7/1/22

Dear Parents and Families of RCS,

Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”  The Bible is very clear about the necessity to seek knowledge and develop wisdom.  It can come from divine inspiration, but is more likely to come from what we learn and how we apply it.

In this fourth installment of the summer information series, we look at the benefits of critical thinking and how to develop it.  Learning happens at multiple levels – from memorizing a phone number to the synthesis of a new concept or invention from previous information.  One of my favorite examples of this is the scene from the movie Apollo 13.  The engineers on Earth had to create a CO2 filter for a round cartridge out of a square filter and the scraps and parts the astronauts had in space, then be able to recreate a step-by-step instruction sheet.  But, since most of us (most likely all of us – haha) won’t ever need that knowledge in space, why is it important to the rest of us?

In the blog “The Benefits of Critical Thinking and How to Develop It”, there are five benefits to developing critical thinking.  First, it helps to improve decision making.  Developing higher-order thinking helps to process multiple pieces of information more quickly and systematically.  From the example above, it also enhances problem-solving ability.  Since students need to develop research skills (not just for college but for anything that involves a major choice or decision in life), it helps with analyzing and synthesizing every aspect of details for a better result.  This can also refine and polish their creativity.  Finally, thinking critically stimulates curiosity, which is paramount to the development of new ideas, inventions, and “outside the box” problem solving.

So, how do we foster this?  Ask questions.  This leads to greater curiosity and clarifies thinking.  Second, scrutinize the consequences.  Asking questions will lead to things like “what will happen if…?”, and helps us to see the outcomes more clearly.  We should also develop active listening.  Being engaged in what we hear rather than just being present when someone else is speaking helps us be more informed and become better decision makers.

Our world is continually changing and becoming more complex.  Our students need the skills to be able to process information and make informed, creative decisions based on strong convictions.  Knowledge and insight as we seek the Lord leads to wisdom; this develops the ability to think critically and help point a lost world toward their loving Creator.

Happy Independence Day!  Remember to thank those who have served and are serving our great country that we may have freedom.  We love you and are grateful for you.

Blessings,

Bill Sharp, M.Ed.
